Airburst
Airburst describes an explosive device or shell that detonates mid-air at a programmed distance from the shooter — designed to strike enemies hiding behind cover.
The most iconic version is the XM25 Airburst Grenade Launcher from Battlefield 4. It used a laser rangefinder to set a detonation distance, allowing players to explode grenades just beyond walls or obstacles. This mechanic made it perfect for countering entrenched snipers and campers, leading to its reputation as “the camper killer.”
While tactically innovative, the XM25 quickly became one of the most controversial weapons in the series. Players complained it required minimal skill and disrupted pacing, resulting in multiple nerfs and server bans.
The concept returned in Battlefield 2042 via gadgets like the Airburst Launcher and Smart Explosives, though their lethality was reduced to maintain balance. Still, “airburst spam” remains a meme symbolizing Battlefield’s eternal struggle between realism, chaos, and fairness.
⚠️ Community reaction: On Reddit and YouTube, “airburst moments” compilations showcase players wiping entire squads behind walls — usually followed by all-chat messages like “XM25 OP again?”
