Carthag Settlement: What Does It Mean in Game Context?
In Dune: Awakening, Carthag is the former capital of House Harkonnen on Arrakis, and in the game's story it has already been destroyed. You cannot visit Carthag as a working settlement. The Harkonnen hub players actually use is Harko Village, their temporary capital while a new city, Neo Carthag, is under construction. When players search for a "Carthag settlement", they usually mean Harko Village or one of the Carthag story locations.
How Settlements Work
Settlements in Dune: Awakening are social hubs with merchants and services. According to the community wiki's location list, both major settlements, Harko Village for the Harkonnens and Arrakeen for the Atreides, are public areas where vehicles cannot be used and bases cannot be built. You go there to trade, take contracts and talk to story characters, then return to the open map to build and fight.
The wiki describes Harko Village as a newly built village on the outskirts of the Neo Carthag construction site. In the lore, it was originally Korona Village, built by House Richese when they governed Arrakis, and the Harkonnens renamed it after Carthag was lost. Glossu Rabban rules from there, issuing contracts, regulating the spice trade and coordinating military operations.
What You'll Find in Harko Village
- Faction services: Piter de Vries as the Journey faction officer and a Harkonnen quartermaster at Spire Keep.
- Trade: a water vendor, a scrap trader, a weapons merchant and a Spice Miner's Guild contact.
- Banking: a Spacing Guild banker at the CHOAM Exchange.
- Landsraad vendors: rare crafting materials and cosmetic swatches sold for House Scrip.
- Training and story: advanced Bene Gesserit and Swordmaster trainers, plus characters tied to the Journey and class questlines, such as the herbalist Dr. Kumari for the Trooper line.
- Other services: a vehicle vendor and an appearance customization NPC in the Beast's Bend district.
- Travel: ornithopter pilots at major tradeposts, such as Griffin's Reach in the Hagga Basin, fly you to Harko Village for a Solari fee, and a pilot at Spire Keep offers taxi flights out. You can also fly your own ornithopter to the map edge and choose Harko Village on the world map.
Carthag Locations in the Game
- Ruins of Old Carthag: a story location you can only enter during specific Journey quests, including "Searching for Answers" and "A Deadly Poison". The wiki's lore notes say the city was destroyed during the War of Assassins, when a lasgun struck a defensive shield.
- Neo Carthag Arena: an illicit fighting arena near the Neo Carthag construction site, visited during the Journey arc "The Great Convention - Part II", where you search for a Face Dancer among the dueling champions.
- Arsunt Garrison: a former Sardaukar training outpost abandoned after Carthag's destruction, reached through a faction contract that unlocks at Faction Rank 19.
Tips
- Do not try to fly to the Carthag ruins on your own. They open only as part of the story, so follow your Journey tracker.
- Use the Spacing Guild banker to deposit Solari. Since Update 1.3, ornithopter pilots can take payment straight from your bank.
- If you collect House Scrip, check the Landsraad vendors for rare crafting materials.
- Bring a vehicle only as far as the settlement entrance; vehicles cannot be used inside settlements.
- If you side with the Atreides, Arrakeen fills the same role. Harko Village also has a trader selling Atreides-style variants to players with Harkonnen reputation.
