Battle-Hardened in Path of Exile 2: What Does It Mean?
Battle-hardened is a notable passive skill on the Path of Exile 2 passive tree. It is a hybrid defence node that boosts both armour and evasion, cuts the extra damage you take from enemy critical hits, and adds a little Strength and Dexterity. It is not a status effect or a character state. It is a node you allocate with passive points.
What It Gives
According to the community wiki, Battle-hardened grants:
- 20% increased Armour and Evasion Rating
- Hits against you have 20% reduced Critical Damage Bonus
- +5 to Strength and Dexterity
Passive values can change between patches, so check the node in game before planning around exact numbers.
How Each Part Works
- Armour. Reduces damage from hits, by default only physical damage. It is proportional to the size of the hit, so it is much better against many small hits than against one huge slam.
- Evasion. Gives a chance to evade enemy hits entirely. The exact chance also depends on the attacker's accuracy.
- Reduced Critical Damage Bonus. Lowers the extra damage enemy critical hits deal to you. It does not stop crits from happening, but it makes them hurt less, which helps against spike damage.
- Attributes. The Strength and Dexterity help meet gear and gem requirements for hybrid characters.
Where You'll Find It
Battle-hardened sits in the Strength/Dexterity part of the passive tree, the region used by armour-and-evasion characters such as the Mercenary; the game data even files it under the Mercenary area. Community lists of the notables that the unique jewel Megalomaniac can allocate have also included it. That Diamond jewel drops in the Simulacrum, cannot be chanced and allocates two or three random notables, so a Megalomaniac that rolls Battle-hardened gives you the node without pathing to it. Because the notable pool can change between patches, check the jewel's current list before buying one for this node.
Who Should Take It
- Hybrid armour/evasion builds. You get value from both halves of the defence bonus.
- Characters that die to crits. The crit damage reduction smooths out burst damage from rare monsters and bosses.
- Strength/Dexterity starts. If you are already near it, it is a cheap mix of defence and attributes.
Common Mistakes
- Treating it as a full defence. Twenty percent more armour and evasion is a multiplier on what your gear already provides. On low-defence gear the gain is small.
- Ignoring the crit line. The reduced critical damage bonus is often the most useful part against bosses and rares that land big critical hits.
- Using old guides. Some web pages describe "Battle-Hardened" as a state you reach by levelling or gear upgrades. That is not how the game works: it is only a passive node.
Tips
- Do not count on armour against elemental damage. You still need resistances.
- Percentage increases need a base to work on. Battle-hardened is strongest when your gear already has solid armour and evasion.
- Compare it with nearby single-defence notables. A pure evasion or pure armour build may get more from a specialised node.
- Reduced critical damage bonus also rolls on gear as a suffix, for example "of Deadening" on Strength/Dexterity items, so you can stack it from both the tree and your armour.
FAQ
Is Battle-hardened a buff you gain in combat?
No. It is a permanent passive notable that works as long as it is allocated.
Does Battle-hardened help against spells?
Partly. The crit damage reduction applies to hits in general and evasion works against hits, but armour on its own only reduces physical damage by default.
Can I get Battle-hardened without pathing to it?
Possibly, if a Megalomaniac jewel rolls it and the node is still in the jewel's pool in the current patch. Notable lists and current values are on the Path of Exile 2 community wiki.
