Arcanite Bars in WoW Classic
An Arcanite Bar is a high-end crafting material from the original World of Warcraft, made by an alchemist who transmutes one Arcane Crystal and one Thorium Bar. Blacksmiths, engineers and enchanters need it for some of the best crafted items of the level 60 era, such as Arcanite Reaper. Because the transmute has a cooldown in Classic Era and Arcane Crystals are rare, Arcanite Bars are among the most valuable trade goods on Classic Era and Hardcore realms.
How to make an Arcanite Bar
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Recipe | Transmute: Arcanite, sold by Alchemist Pestlezugg in Gadgetzan (Tanaris) |
| Skill | Alchemy 275 |
| Reagents | 1 Arcane Crystal + 1 Thorium Bar |
| Tool | A Philosopher's Stone in your bags |
| Cooldown, Classic Era / Hardcore | 2 days according to the Classic spell data |
| Cooldown, TBC Anniversary | None: the cooldown was removed in patch 2.4.0 |
Because of the cooldown, a single alchemist can make only a few bars a week in Classic Era. Guilds that need many bars, for example for several Arcanite Reapers, collect crystals from members and spread the transmutes across several alchemists.
Where Arcane Crystals come from
Arcane Crystals are a rare extra drop from mining high-level veins:
| Node | Approximate chance of an Arcane Crystal |
|---|---|
| Rich Thorium Vein | ~13% |
| Small Thorium Vein | ~8% |
| Ooze Covered Thorium Vein | ~8% |
| Ooze Covered Rich Thorium Vein | ~6% |
| Large Obsidian Chunk (Silithus, Ahn'Qiraj) | under 1% |
The percentages are community drop-rate data. Rich Thorium veins in the level 50–60 zones are where most crystals come from, which is why those mining routes are crowded on fresh realms.
What Arcanite Bars are used for
| Item | Profession | Arcanite Bars |
|---|---|---|
| Arcanite Reaper (two-handed axe) | Blacksmithing 300 | 20, plus 6 Enchanted Leather and 2 Dense Grinding Stones |
| Arcanite Champion (two-handed sword) | Blacksmithing | 15, plus Azerothian Diamonds, a Righteous Orb, Large Opals, Enchanted Leather |
| Lionheart Helm (plate helm) | Blacksmithing 300 | 12, plus Thorium Bars and gems |
| Arcanite Rod | Blacksmithing | 3, plus a Dense Grinding Stone; enchanters turn it into a Runed Arcanite Rod (Enchanting 290) |
| Arcanite Dragonling | Engineering 300 | Inside its 4 Delicate Arcanite Converters |
| Other high-end crafts | Various | Sulfuron Hammer, Icebane Breastplate, Core Marksman Rifle, Force Reactive Disk and more |
Arcanite Reaper is the iconic one: a pre-raid weapon for warriors and other two-handed users, and the item most players think of when they hear "arcanite". The plans drop from Bannok Grimaxe in Lower Blackrock Spire.
Arcanite in each version
- Classic Era and Hardcore: fully relevant. Bars are slow to make and in steady demand from new characters and raiders.
- Season of Discovery: the same material, used by the original recipes.
- TBC Anniversary: since the realms moved to The Burning Crusade, Outland materials (Fel Iron, Adamantite, Khorium) replaced arcanite in new recipes, and the transmute has no cooldown, so arcanite matters mainly for older recipes.
- Retail: an old-world material with no role in current crafting.
Note that other items carry the word too, such as Arcanite Ripper, a dropped weapon. Here it always means the crafting bar.
Tips
- Use the transmute every time it is ready in Classic Era; a missed cooldown is lost production.
- Price crystals and bars together. If a bar sells for less than a crystal plus a Thorium Bar, buy bars instead of transmuting.
- Specialize your mining route on Rich Thorium for the best crystal rate.
