What they are used for

Re-rolling: an exotic item can be reconfigured at the crafting table at the cost of one exotic component.
Crafting: crafted exotics such as Regulus, Liberty, The Chatterbox and Nemesis need exotic components too.
Regulus as an example: its recipe lists five named exotic components, from Revolver: Main Frame to Revolver: Gold Ingot, plus 60 Receiver Components.
Those named components come from the four named bosses of Operation Iron Horse and its final reward chest.

The fan wiki counted 51 exotics (20 armor pieces, 31 weapons) as of Title Update 22; later seasons added more, such as Oxpecker and Exodus Gloves in Year 6 Season 3.
