Prototype Cores are the rare resource of Prototype gear in The Division 2. Converting a High-End, Named or gear set item to Prototype costs 1 Prototype Core, and both rerolling and upgrading Augments need cores as well. They come mainly from dismantling Prototype Gear, or from the Prototype Core Cache that Raids and the Incursion contain.

What cores are spent on

The conversion of an item to Prototype: 1 core, for items at level 40 and maximum Expertise.
Rerolling an Augment, when you want a different effect and can choose whether to keep it.
Upgrading an Augment: Augments improve over time through use, and cores pay for the upgrade.
Since Into the Dark, maxing out the Augment of one item costs 31 cores in total, and a reroll costs at most 6 cores from the third reroll on.

It can no longer be optimized or recalibrated, so cores are spent on a finished piece.

Can I buy cores to reroll only?

Yes. Rerolls and upgrades use the same core currency as the conversion.

Can an exotic be turned into Prototype?

Not at the moment: exotics are excluded from Prototype conversion, although later seasons may add them.

Do Raids give cores?

Yes, the Prototype Core Cache in Raids and in the Incursion is the second source after dismantling Prototype Gear.
