Murmuring Obols are the gambling currency of Diablo 4: the Purveyor of Curiosities takes no gold, only Obols, and sells gear by slot without showing the item until it lands in your bag. Patch 3.1.0 (30 June 2026) raised the Obol cap from 2,500 to 25,000, so a much larger stack can now be held and spent in one visit at the Purveyor.

What Obols are spent on

Gear by slot: you choose the slot, the game rolls the item, and the result can be Magic, Rare, Legendary (Ancestral included), Unique or Mythic Unique.
Whispering Keys: the Purveyor also sells keys for Silent Chests in the open world; since patch 3.2.1 the chest tooltip shows its Obol cost.
Season 15: the Urn of Curiosities Season Blessing raises the chance of a second item when you buy from the Purveyor.

Where Obols come from

Random events across Sanctuary, from Local Events to World Events, are the steady source.
Cursed Chests and Shrines in dungeons, and chests in Nightmare Dungeons.
Helltide: defeating a Helltide Commander after a Portal Invasion grants Obols along with items and Cinders.

Murmuring Obols: a slider from 1,000 to 10,000 in steps of 1,000, well under the 25,000 cap.
