Forgotten Souls are the Legendary crafting material that Ancestral gear runs on in Diablo 4: the Blacksmith and the Occultist ask for them when you improve Ancestral items. Patch 3.2.1, which opened Season 15 on 15 September 2026, cut several Soul costs at the Occultist and the Jeweler, so the same stack now covers more enchants and gems than it did a season ago.

What Forgotten Souls are spent on

Occultist: enchanting an Ancestral item costs 10 Souls, down from 25 before patch 3.2.1.
Jeweler: a Royal Gem costs 10 Souls (was 30) and a Grand Gem 50 (was 300).
Blacksmith: Masterworking a 900 Item Power item takes Forgotten Souls next to Obducite and gold, and Tempering an Ancestral Legendary uses them too.

Where they drop

In Torment difficulties: Salvage Spoils in War Plans, salvaging Ancestral gear at the Blacksmith, Legion Events, Helltide Tortured Gifts, Tree of Whispers caches, the Infernal Hordes and the Undercity of Kurast.
Patch 3.2.1 added Souls to the Undercity's Tribute of Refinement and Greater Tribute of Refinement, and raised Salvage Cache rewards from Whispers with a larger boost to Souls at higher Torment levels.
The Alchemist refines Veiled Crystals into Forgotten Souls, and since patch 3.1 Baleful Fragments can be converted into them as well.
