Obducite is the material that pays for Masterworking at the Blacksmith in Diablo 4. Each Masterwork raises the Quality of a Legendary, Unique or Mythic Unique item, which lifts its base damage, armor, resistance and affix values, and the Obducite price climbs with every Quality rank. It starts dropping at level 60 in Nightmare Dungeons, the Infernal Hordes and the Undercity of Kurast.

Key facts

Item type	Rare crafting material used by the Blacksmith to Masterwork equipment
Masterworking effect	Raises item Quality, which boosts base damage, armor, resistance and affix values; a finished item gets a capstone bonus on one affix
Cost rule	The Obducite cost rises with each Quality rank; two-handed weapons cost double
Drops from level 60	Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, Undercity of Kurast
Strong sources	Horadric Strongrooms and Treasure Breach sigils in Nightmare Dungeons; Undercity with Tribute of Refinement; Bartuc in the Infernal Hordes; Masterworking Caches from Mercenary bartering
Capstone reroll	Obducite and gold; Ancestral items also need Neathiron
Season 15 blessing	Urn of Masterworking: higher chance to drop additional Obducite
Legacy version	An older version of Obducite was earned from The Pit; the current one is collected in Nightmare Dungeons, the Infernal Hordes and the Undercity

What Obducite is spent on

Quality ranks: every upgrade adds a random amount of Quality, and a finished item gets a capstone bonus on one affix.
Capstone rerolls: moving the capstone to another affix costs Obducite and gold, plus Neathiron on Ancestral items.
Two-handed weapons cost double.

Where it drops

Nightmare Dungeons: enemies, chests and events, with the largest amounts from Horadric Strongrooms and from sigils with the Treasure Breach affix.
Undercity of Kurast run with a Tribute of Refinement or a Greater Tribute of Refinement.
Infernal Hordes, where Bartuc, Lord of Chaos is a strong source, and Masterworking Caches from bartering with Mercenaries.
Season 15: the Urn of Masterworking Season Blessing raises the chance of extra Obducite drops.

What you get

Amount Of Obducite: a slider from 10,000 to 100,000 in steps of 2,500.
Select Server: Seasonal or Eternal.
Difficulty: Softcore or Hardcore.

Requirements

A level 70 character on the realm and mode you pick; Obducite itself drops from level 60.

Obducite FAQ

Does a Masterwork always add the same Quality?

No. Each upgrade adds a random amount, so the number of upgrades, and the Obducite you burn, varies from item to item.

Does Masterworking need Neathiron?

Only for capstone rerolls on Ancestral items. The Quality ranks themselves cost Obducite, gold and salvage, with Forgotten Souls on 900 Item Power gear.
