An Infernal Compass is the key to the Infernal Hordes, a wave-based fight in the Burning Hells that ends with the Fell Council or, for 666 Burning Aether, with Bartuc, Lord of Chaos. Compasses work much like Nightmare Sigils: they scale to the difficulty you play and can teleport you to the start. This lot farms the number of compasses you set on the slider, from 1 to 300, on the Seasonal or Eternal Realm.

What it is spent on

Each compass rolls 6, 8 or 10 waves of 60 seconds. Fleeting compasses that drop before Torment have 4 waves.
After every wave you pick one of three Infernal Offers, each with a boon and a bane, and the choices stack for the rest of the run.
Burning Aether from the waves buys the Spoils of Hell at the end; Spoils of Greater Equipment cost 400 Aether and hold at least one Ancestral Legendary.
Aether left over can go to Spoils of Material (Obducite, Gem Fragments, Forgotten Soul) or Spoils of Gold; unspent Aether is lost when the run ends.

Where compasses come from

Drops from Helltide chests, Tree of Whispers caches, Nightmare Dungeon completions and the Pit, starting in Torment difficulty.
Since patch 3.2.1 the Occultist crafts a compass for 500 Sigil Powder, down from 666, and salvaging one returns 100 Sigil Powder.
The questline "The Eyes of the Enemy", done once per account, unlocks the Hordes and hands out one compass to start with.

Infernal Hordes in Season 15

Diablo's Splinter of Terror changes the Infernal Hordes; its Primeval Essence upgrade makes Flames of Metus spawn Aether there.
