Blood Lance turned inward

With the plate on, you are Blood Lanced yourself. When Blood Lance would deal damage to you, it instead Fortifies you for 5% of your Maximum Life, and it has a 10% chance to form a Blood Orb.

On top of that, Blood Lance deals increased damage. So the same skill that fuels the defensive effect is also the one the item makes stronger, which keeps a Blood Lance build focused on a single skill.

Blood Lance in short

Blood Lance is a Core Necromancer skill that costs Essence. It throws a lance that hits an enemy and ricochets to another one, leaves the enemies it hits lanced, and deals damage to every other lanced enemy each time it connects. Fortify, which the plate hands out, is a second reservoir of Life that drains over time to heal you. The chest armor also always drops with Skill Ranks to Blood Lance, in line with its single-skill focus.

Blood Lance upgrades named in the game data include Overpower (it consumes 2 Overpower stacks to throw an extra lance), Gore Quills (every third cast forms a Blood Orb) and Fortify (4% of Maximum Life as Fortify when it hits an enemy that is already lanced). The plate's own Fortify and Blood Orb effects run through the same lance, so those upgrades add to what the chest piece does.
