Runewords in Diablo IV come in two forms. The Vessel of Hatred kind pairs one Ritual rune, which builds Offering when its condition is met, with one Invocation rune that spends the Offering on an effect, both socketed into one item. Season 15 added the Diablo II kind: finished Unique items such as Enigma or Grief, transmuted in the Horadric Cube from a Common base item and a fixed rune recipe. This lot covers loose runes, those finished items and rune sets by gear slot.
| Socketed Runeword | One Rune of Ritual (generates Offering) plus one Rune of Invocation (spends Offering on an effect) in the same item |
|---|---|
| Sockets | Only items with two sockets, such as Helm, Chest, Legs and two-handed weapons; gems and runes cannot share an item |
| Limits | Two Runewords per character; the same rune cannot be used twice |
| Overflow | Offering above the requirement boosts many Invocation effects |
| Legacy Runewords | 19 Diablo II style Runewords added in Season 15; finished Unique items made from a fixed rune recipe, with affix values that roll within ranges |
| Legacy Runeword crafting | Horadric Cube: a Common (white) base item of the listed type plus the runes; an Ancestral base gives higher Item Power; the recipes are not shown in the Cube list |
| Enigma | Jah + Ith + Ber, chest armor |
| Infinity | Ber + Mal + Ber + Ist, any two-handed weapon |
| Call to Arms | Amn + Ral + Mal + Ist + Ohm, one-handed weapon, Totem or Focus |
| Grief | Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral, axe or sword |
| Lore | Ort + Sol, helm |
| Season 15 runes | Amn, Ber, Eth, Ist, Ith, Lo, Mal, Ort, Ral, Sol, Tal, Tir (marked as Season 15 runes; the new Ritual rune Tal sits beside the older Invocation rune Tal) |
| Rune ladder | Horadric Cube upgrades, for example 3 Tir into 1 Eth and 3 Eth into 1 Ith |
| Expansion | Runes are Vessel of Hatred content and drop only for owners of the expansion |
| Horadric Cube access | The Cube is found during the Lord of Hatred campaign and then stays available in Temis |
A Runeword needs one Ritual and one Invocation rune in the same item with two sockets, such as a helm, chest, pants or two-handed weapon. A character can run two Runewords, cannot repeat a rune and cannot mix gems and runes in one item. Extra Offering beyond the cost becomes Overflow, which strengthens some Invocation effects.
