The potion as a shield

Your Healing Potions grant a Barrier for 100% of your Maximum Life for 1 second. You gain Damage Reduction while you have a Barrier and may drink your Healing Potion while at full Life.

Drinking at full Life is the key rule: you do not need to be hurt to use a potion, so the Barrier is available as an emergency button at any time the potion is off cooldown.

Barrier and potions

A Barrier absorbs damage from all sources up to a set amount, and it cannot exceed your Maximum Life. A Barrier of 100% of Maximum Life is therefore the largest one the game allows. It lasts one second, which is short, so the damage reduction while it is active is what carries the item. The chest armor always drops with a main stat and an Armor affix.

Temerity, another unique that lets you drink the potion at full Life, is a pair of pants, so the two items cover different slots.
