Empty Defensive slots as a resource

For each Defensive Skill that is not on your Action Bar, you deal increased damage and gain that skill's associated Enchantment effect. So a bar with no Defensive Skills at all collects the bonus once per skill you left out.

That makes the mace a choice about survivability. You give up active defenses and get a stack of damage bonuses and Enchantment effects in return, which suits a build that relies on other protection.

Which skills count as Defensive

For the Sorcerer, the game data sorts Flame Shield, Frost Nova, Ice Armor and Teleport into the Defensive category, so those are the skills that the mace pays you for leaving off the bar. Each of them also exists as an Enchantment, a passive effect you can carry without casting the skill. Orsivane takes the Enchantment side for any Defensive Skill that is unslotted, which means the trade is an active skill for a permanent effect plus a damage bonus.

In practice the count is simple: the more Defensive Skills a build can do without, the more the mace pays. The Defensive group has only four skills for this class, so the maximum comes from a bar with none of them equipped, and that is also the point where you carry the Enchantment effect of every one of them.
