What the catalyst changes on Dead Messenger

The catalyst unlocks the Turnabout perk: breaking the shield of a combatant, or of a Guardian using their Super, grants you an overshield. The Fundamentals lets the launcher change between Arc, Solar and Void, so Turnabout can be set off against whichever shield type shows up.

How the catalyst is earned in the game

The exotic mission Vox Obscura, part of Pinnacle Ops, is where the weapon and its catalyst come from. The catalyst objective is split by damage mode: 200 kills in Arc mode, 200 in Solar mode and 200 in Void mode. A crafted Dead Messenger can also be shaped with the catalyst applied instead of earning the kills.
